Leggy lady: Angelina Jolie stole the show on the red carpet at the 84th Annual Academy Awards in a black velvet gown with a thigh high split
With a silent film up for a plethora of nominations this year, the 84th Academy Awards undoubtedly has a retro feel.
But as the stars stepped out onto the red carpet it appeared that Oscars style also made a return to the black and white era.
Angelina Jolie lead the way stepping out in a dramatic dark velvet gown which boasted a thigh-high split to devastating effect.
They are all white: Gwyneth Paltrow looked incredible in her oyster coloured Tom Ford dress with caped detail, while Cameron Diaz showed off her figure-hugging Gucci gown which boasted a simple basque with a dramatic train
The actress, 36, arrived on the red carpet with partner Brad Pitt and she looked stunning in the simple strapless gown which she had teamed with peep-toe heels and a flash of red lipstick.
While Angelina had opted to show off her statement look in the Atelier Versace piece, other stars decided to step out in light and white gowns - which have proved popular throughout the awards season.
Gwyneth Paltrow and Cameron Diaz lead the way with the trend with the Contagion star showing off simple lines in Tom Ford.
Caped crusader: Gwyneth Paltrow looked simple and elegant in her Tom Ford ensemble which boasted clean cut lines and a cape detail
The ruffled effect: Cameron Diaz stepped out in a curve-hugging Gucci ensemble and the simple bustier of the dress was complimented with a full feathered train
Working her magic: The actress cut a poised figure as she stood and smiled for the camera
Stealing the show: Angelina knew exactly how to stand in her dress and stuck her leg out of the split to emphasis the bold dress
My lady: Brad Pitt held Angelina's hand and the pair shared an intimate look as they posed up on the red carpet
Emma Stone, Jessica Chastain and Berenice Bejo all showed off fire-red hues which certainly heated up the red carpet.

Her co-star and Best Actress in A Supporting Role nominee Jessica Chastain looked incredible in a flowing black gown with intricate gold detail by Alexander McQueen which she teamed with $2million worth of Harry Winston jewels.
Keeping up with the Pitts: Angelina was seen holding hands with Brad's parents Jane and William Pitt
Berenice Bejo, leading lady of silent film sensation The Artist, was another to add a first touch of glamour on the red carpet - and was sporting red hair.
Berenice, who stepped out in Elie Saab couture, told MailOnline: 'It's red for a film role. In fact for two film parts I have to have my hair red so it will be like this for a few weeks.'
Bold and bright: Michelle Williams looked incredible in her tiered bright coral Louis Vuitton dress while Viola Davis who is also nominated for Best Actress in a Leading Role, looked incredible in a green dress by Vera Wang
